wilson is gone

we put wilson to sleep this afternoon. he'd been having trouble breathing and had been on antibiotics for the last 10 days to little effect. he was almost 2.5 years old. i've never been as sure before that this was what an animal wanted. he was ready to go.
one of the last things he did was climb up onto my shoulder in the exam room as if to say goodbye-- even though it must have taken him a great effort to do so. he was the first rat i handled in my experiment, a wonderful companion with a gentle demeanor, and my favorite rat period, always. rip mister man.
