we put wilson to sleep this afternoon. he'd been having trouble breathing and had been on antibiotics for the last 10 days to little effect. he was almost 2.5 years old. i've never been as sure before that this was what an animal wanted. he was ready to go.

one of the last things he did was climb up onto my shoulder in the exam room as if to say goodbye-- even though it must have taken him a great effort to do so. he was the first rat i handled in my experiment, a wonderful companion with a gentle demeanor, and my favorite rat period, always. rip mister man.

he was getting up there. i knew he wasn't going to last too much longer. still, it's amazing how fast we bond to even some of the smallest, short-lived of pets.

if there is a rat heaven though, at least he can now keep house company.

So the average life span of a rat is only several years?

Two to three, and in reality a rat who sees his third birthday is very lucky (and probably has a caretaker who's shelled out a bunch for vet bills). In the wild it's shorter. The longest a rat has ever been documented to live is seven years four months -- that's the equivalent of that French woman who lived to be 122.

He was in the 1995 Guinness Book of World Records! Rodney the rat. Of course we know how long rats really live: just long enough to make you love them.

me too. i kept privately hoping he could be Wonder Rat and make it to three or longer, but ... they decline so fast.
