ans99remember this? this is where i objectify women in a horribly lascivious manner and post other people's portraits of them with abandon (don't worry guys, you get your turn next). anyhoo, here are hot chix #50-26 in the countdown (and for 100-76 and 75-51, click the appropriate links):
50. catherine tate. i hated her in "the runaway bride," but upon her dramatic return to doctor who she made some style changes and almost reminded me of tori amos in her first fourth season episode. that hair and that brown jacket were very flattering, but even in "turn left" sans most of her makeup she was incredible.
49. felicia day. she stole my heart (and everyone else's) in dr. horrible's sing-along blog, but she's been involved in her own projects too, like the guild (another cool web series) in which she gets to be much more like i imagine her-- a gorgeous quirky dork.
48. rhona mitra. as tara in boston legal, she was the best match for alan shore in the history of the series. her cheekbones are a bit of a turn-off to me, but she pulls out of the stereotypical "supermodel" look with her long hair, which almost covers up her features at times, and her lazy sort of expression. her chemistry with james spader is amazing.
47. aishwarya rai. i first saw her in bride and prejudice and just couldn't believe how striking her eyes are.
46. alyson hannigan. i didn't want to put her on this list, because i resisted being attracted to willow on buffy the vampire slayer for the longest time. but after her turn playing a witch gone bad in season 6 i started to realize that-- just like everyone else-- i'm totally gay for willow!
45. amber benson. and coming in just a squeak above willow is tara. i think tara is much more of a sensual character than willow, and amber benson herself is more gorgeous than the character design gives her credit for.
44. kristin davis. this picture expresses perfectly my love of kristin davis. here you have sarah jessica parker, her sex and the city co-star and the supposed "hottie" of the show, looking like a total hosebag, and smug little kristin davis sitting next to her all bundled up in a coat and KNITTING and still looking ten times hotter than parker ever could. davis really owned the sunshiney personality of charlotte in the show, but tempered it with some deep wisdom lying somewhere beneath and surfacing at odd times. i think at one point i compared her to marshy from ken's web-comic "tsuduku."
43. amanda palmer. she's intelligent, creative, blessed with nimble fingers, genuinely in love with her fans, and incredibly comfortable with her body. it is hard not to fall a little bit in love with amanda palmer if you interact with her in any way. i think my favorite story about her was when she serenaded neil gaiman with a ukelele in her underwear.
42. nicole kidman. i cannot believe tom cruise gave her up. he's got to be insane. oh wait.
41. michelle yeoh. i've already discussed much of what i love about the women in crouching tiger. michelle's character is the kind of woman i'd like to be-- someone who is coolly, quietly confident of her abilities, but not brash or bragging. she's such an amazing actress-- to convey so much by saying so little.
40. katharine mcphee. this woman is terribly hot, and a great singer. when she was on american idol i was really hoping she would win, because she's seriously the whole package.
39. jennifer morrison. i have been rooting for the character of cameron on house forever, and keep hoping she'll end up with the title character. it surprised me that she's a natural blonde, and it took some adjustment when she stopped dying it brunette-- but her cheerful, cheeky face with the killer eyebrows looks beautiful no matter what the hair color. i really miss the dorky little collared outfits she used to wear when she was a regular member of the team, and i always saw her as the most intelligent duckling house has ever had.
38. olivia wilde. another hot chick from house, olivia wilde as "thirteen" caught me from the beginning. she's so mysterious, a perfect foil for house since she is so unwilling to play his games, and hey, she's not a bad diagnostician either. or, judging by recent events, not a bad baroness. i think i really started to fall in love with her when i saw some of her behind the scenes stuff, like the on-set april fool's prank this year. of all the actors on set, she and hugh laurie just beamed like happy children when the event took place. it's hard not to instantly love that.
37. alicia witt. one fateful college evening, i was watching my roommate's tv, bored. i stumbled upon urban legend, that horror film where, you know. urban legends are being reenacted by some crazed serial killer. alicia witt came onto the screen and she was just a vision, like some sort of a younger tori amos. later i learned she's also a piano prodigy or something-- who'da thought?
36. aimee mann. after digging on her wonderfully sardonic lyrics and refreshingly less than perfect almost-tenor voice, i saw her in concert. she came out in sneakers and blue jeans like some sort of doe-faced folk-rock angel, and i've been smitten ever since.
35. lisa bastoni. seeing lisa bastoni live will always be one of the highlights of my existence. a genuine folk/hippie busker, with a voice like a songbird's and beautiful long hair, and i'm willing to bet not a mean bone in her body.
34.madeline stowe. it's hard to watch "12 monkeys" and not think "god, what a beautiful creature." i'd come back in time for her too, make no mistake.
33. beth gibbons. as the lead singer of portishead, beth's voice is at turns creepy, dark, soaring, and mournful. i would have never expected her to look like she does-- she looks so normal, and could very easily be mistaken for a soccer mom or something. somehow that just makes her even hotter.
32. katarina witt. i couldn't just pick one picture. both of these are from the 1994 olympics. she was and always will be my favorite ice skater, simply because she's just so effortlessly amazing at what she does. i remember people were really snarking during this competition because she was starting to get "too old" to compete (wtf, figure skating profession, she was in her 30's!). but when she came out in the robin hood costume and did her routine (the like of which i haven't seen since), all of a sudden everyone shut up. witt is a really expressive skater with some inventive choreography, and too many these days are just into the jumps and points. it's refreshing to see someone who puts her heart into the sport.
31. audrey tatou. even though she had the oddest haircut i think i've ever seen in amelie, she was so damn beautiful. audrey as a shy, overimaginative recluse with a penchant for zorro masks? all the better!
30. erin mckeown. holy marbles, but her short haircut is hot. when i first saw her she reminded me of ani difranco's sister or something, and she hasn't relinquished that tomboy femininity one bit since. she sings like an honest-to-god lark, too, by the way.
29. bjork. oh, bjork. i don't think you could be ordinary if you tried.
28. vermillion lies. i'm kind of obsessed with this band, and think it makes some of the best music i've heard in a long while. although they have a fairly large following, they've been known to play extremely small venues, like coffeeshops and people's basements. they use instruments that are quite unconventional (if you attend a show, you may end up being asked to play the lobster!). and they are extremely approachable. but really, when it comes down to it-- how could i *not* find a pair of sisters who wear mustaches hot?
27. regina spektor. i didn't want to like her, but her playful melodies and wistful lyrics won out. her music, both confident and introspective, is a large part of what makes regina hot. and once again, it is so fantastically awesome to see a beautiful woman who does not starve herself. boob solidarity!
26. gina torres. do i need to elaborate? really? well ok. she's got really deep, dark eyes and a confident air about her. she was the only female character i could respect on firefly. just one of the guys. i can really appreciate that. and i can also appreciate the polar opposite of zoe, as seen above.

haven't caught castle at all yet. tv programming has been so erratic i don't think i've really gotten the chance to fall in love with any of the new shows before they get cancelled... :/

One gal you didn't mention that I like is Allison Mack of Smallville fame. I've personally felt that Clark in that show is gay because he constantly attracted to Lana Lang who is far lest pretty and interesting than Chloe is. I mean I could see a hard fight of interests between Chloe and Lois Lane, but Lana Lang? Yuck, she got worse as the show progressed. Anyway, I like how she had nerd power and yet she still was really attractive without them doing much in the ways of clothing or make-up like they do with Lana.
I don't know, it always seem to me that the whole Clark-Chloe-Lana things was like something out of Some Kind of Wonderful except Clark never seems to ever really notice Chloe.

Date: 2009-08-13 09:22 pm (UTC)I'm just saying that yes I'm sure Clark being Kryptonian may be different, but they always said that Supes big strength is his humanity and I know that most boys in High School are primed with testosterone and if some of the really, really fine girls gave them the the go-ahead that Clark has turned down, well we'd suspect something odd is going on.
Why chuckle-heads? Here are guys having gals offer to them what most guys have to work for it and usually get their hearts run over. Not saying it doesn't happen to the gals but if the a relatively popular gal had the BMOC, the debate team president and local 'cool guy' all saying, "Just say the word, we'll do it for you!" and she turned them down, wouldn't that seem a bit odd?
Now in Bats case I really don't think he's gay; he's patently neurotic. He's just better at being functional about it over someone like the Joker.

Date: 2009-08-14 01:10 am (UTC)i'm still appalled that you instantly start with the "gay" card just because a guy is discriminating, or maybe single-minded, when it comes to romance. i find the way in which you're determining homosexuality more than a little disparaging, and therefore i find it offensive. your argument makes it seem like what you're really saying is that if a guy doesn't sexually conquer every girl offered to him then there must be something "funny" going on. never mind that you and i have both complained he tends to chase after the wrong *girls*.
the idea that men must do this or be "gay" is the kind of mindset that i'd hope we'd begin to get away from. it calls up VERY old and stereotyped gender roles, and isn't healthy for guys OR gals.
i also beg to differ on your penultimate point: if a girl turned down a bunch of pathetic, slobbering, slavering guys we'd consider that PERFECTLY NORMAL. why? because generally we see girls as looking for more than just sex.
were superman real-- rather than have it be a gay thing, i'd be more worried that he was the obsessive type who wanted what he couldn't have. and maybe he's a little bugged out by his dual identity, his rather heady lifelong responsibility and legacy, his sheer ALIENNESS when you get down to the core of it, the inherent, everpresent danger to himself and those he loves that his lifestyle so graciously provides him, and then of course there's the fact that he IS getting all these random offers of romance when he doesn't "have to work for it." i'd imagine the dude is overloaded and overwhelmed. why would gay or straight even have to enter into that scenario? why would it be the first thing on anyone's mind? who gives a shit?
so personally, i found it a really horrific, nonsensical thing to say, and i have to add that the language was disgusting as well. i don't want people commenting to me about women wanting to be ridden, thx.

Date: 2009-08-14 03:59 pm (UTC)Secondly, I'm not seriously saying he's gay, but it *does* start to strain credibility when a young guy is knee-deep in the opportunity to have sex or even just dating, yet continues to pine for this one girl he can't seem to have. In fact, Clark is often rather neurotic in his own way; Must Have Lana/Can't Tell Lana My Secret so he wants here but makes it so he can't have her.
That's fine; standard comic 101: characters can't be happy. However as a 'buyer' of this story, I can handle aliens that look like humans and mutanteginic rocks, but the story starts getting 'off' to me when a wonderful gal like Chloe finds out Clark's secret, is obviously heads-over-heels for the guy and Clark STILL rather go through all this hell (mostly of his own making) for Lana.
My beef about all this is instead of having Clark deal with very normal issues of competing interests, the writers saddle him with semi-obsession that pretty much makes him miserable. Rather than actually taking a chance on someone else (especially with someone who is obviously interested in him) Clark is set up for failure. Hmm, that sounds familiar to me...the writers setting their characters up with this unreal expectation.
Regardless of whether he's an alien or not, the writers are pushing this whole "There is a perfect True Love" out there for everyone. Well in Clark's case it eventually comes in the form of Lois and I've actually been a bit happy how the writers *eventually* get to that and that Clark was actually pretty good to Lois even in their sort of adversarial way they started out with.
But, for about 5 seasons we are treated to Clark being practically neurotic about Lana. He won't let himself be honest with her (to protect her) yet won't let go. So know we have a super-power alien with issues. First off, he isn't being fair (just like Batman was in Batman Begins with all of Gotham) by making the choice for her. Perhaps if Lana loves Clark, she'd risk the danger, but she is never given the choice till she sleuths it out and by then there is that damaging trust issue.

Date: 2009-08-14 04:00 pm (UTC)In the seminal work "The Killing Joke" Batman makes the attempt to reach out to the Joker because he knows if he doesn't one of them is going to kill the other. Ironic that so many times women have tried to do the same for Batman, to reach out to him and bring him back in from the cold, loneliness of his *self-imposed* mission and yet he refuses them.
So what? Why do I care? I don't like it because it perpetuates this 'lonely person' against the world motif and that "a man's got to do what a man's got to do" when the reality is that if people with attitudes like Batman is shown to have would actually ask for help, cooperate with others and perhaps learn to trust a bit, things would turn out alright.
Going back to Smallville, what are we supposed to take away from it? Again, the thing about Superman was that for an alien, he was incredibly human. Mostly he seems like someone who needs therapy. Teen angst can only go so far. Plus, what message are we supposed to get from Chloe? Better to put your life on hold for 5-6 years, hoping that the man of your dreams will finally notice you or actually go out and make your own life?
I don't know, tension breeds opportunities for stories. However I often feel that too many writers take that out instead of trying to actually do the hard work and try to tell stories from folks whose lives seem to be out of a reality show. I mean if there is one thing I liked about the Fantastic Four is that Reed and Sue seem to be about the only ones in comics who managed to get married, have kids and still function and for the reader it was still interesting. For everyone else, the minute you got married and definitely if you had kids, it was if Fate had painted a bulls-eye on you. "But Ian, marriage and kids are boring" I'm told. So most of us are living the boring life? I disagree and some writers have had the guts to show that 'normal' folks (even in abnormal situations) can be just as interesting and just as heroic.
But then again, when I complain that most writers of comics, books or TV shows seem to always take the easy, lazy way out, I'm constantly told "It's only a book/comic/movie!" like somehow that makes lowering our expectations for a good story okay. Iconic characters seep into our cultural consciousness and having many of them project this sort of unreal life just makes everything harder for people trying to look for direction or inspiration.
Why do I care? Look at it this way, one of my favorite stories was Wonder Woman and Superman on a first date. She asks him what he does and he replies, "I fight crime" to which she says, "No you beat up criminals; what do you do to prevent them from becoming criminals in the first place? Superman didn't have an answer for that. Batman might save you from a mugging but it's Bruce Wayne's companies that are providing thousands of good jobs for the people of Gotham. Who is the bigger hero?
