LOL. Yes, I remember my co-mods back in the day wanting to play it by ear somewhat, and it drove me crazy. It very quickly turns what could have been a plot-driven game into just one 'crazy event' after another with no purpose or direction.

I think even wacky hijinks would work, if the only explanation for them wasn't 'And there's some Petty God Figure who thinks it's funny to throw these at us, really, DON'T ASK QUESTIONS.' If cats with wings regularly invade your comm, maybe it's a...bimonthly species migration or something. Not Comm God summoning cats for the lulz.

I don't even mind a Petty God Figure if it makes SENSE. Like if it's all a big experiment, or a powerplay. But there has to be some backstory or plot involved, and by now it's just so overdone anyway that all the jamjars are samey.

The not asking questions thing is so hard for Doctor Who types, really it is. They should be regularly unveiling men behind curtains and it just doesn't happen.

Exactly. And don't pretend it makes sense if it clearly doesn't. Waving your hand and telling the players not to ask questions won't make the *characters* not ask questions if the game world doesn't do something to prevent them doing so.

You might also try the comm embassylaments. It never really took off, but three people I know started it up, and I did some threading there. I think the mods are going to try to pay attention to it again. It's totally a sandbox, but it was good for one-off threads.
